Verizon’s 2013 Data Breach Investigations Report showed that small businesses are being heavily targeted by cybercriminals. The report showed three quarters of the cases being investigated occurred with 100 employees or less.
Cybercriminals are even forming syndicates of like-minded criminals to share information and new techniques. Small business face a growing cyberthreat without the resources that the big companies can invest in to try to keep their data safe. So, you ask yourself…if Home Depot and Target can’t prevent their customer data from being breached, how can I?
Here are some general guidelines to help you safeguard against a cyberattack:
Protect your network: Make sure you are using appropriate firewall and anti-virus technology and it is up-to-date with the most current patches. Evaluate your security settings on all software, browser and email programs making sure the system options meet your business needs without increasing risk.
Establish safe password policies: The most secure passwords have a minimum of eight characters and a combination of letters, numbers and symbols. Many employees have a simple password that is easy for a cybercriminal to break. It is also good to require employees to change their password on a regular basis. For instance, every 90 days.
Establish usage policies for employees: Monitor mobile device and Wi-Fi access. Employees should only use public Wi-Fi in very limited circumstances. Instruct them not to transmit or access proprietary business or customer information or credit cards through public Wi-Fi.
Have a business continuity plan: Have a clear protocol for which employee will manage the situation if a data breach occurs. This plan will help you in any emergency such as a fire or weather-related disaster to ensure the business can still meet their customer demands.
The possibility of being the victim of a cyberattack is very real regardless of the size of your business. It is important to secure your business now.
